A 34-year-old Winnipeg man has been charged with 39 counts of stealing mail during a crime spree in the city between March and May.

After reviewing surveillance footage and getting images of a suspect, police arrested the man in the 200 block of Toronto Street, in the city's West End, on May 17.

Search warrants were also used to recover of some stolen property and computer equipment, police stated in a news release issued May 24.

In addition to the 39 counts of mail theft, the man has also been charged with 39 counts of break-and-enter and five counts of failure to comply with conditions of a recognizance.

He is in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

The mail thefts occurred at apartment complexes in the St. James neighbourhood as well as downtown, Fort Garry and the east district.
