Currently I have internet provided by an ethernet cable run into my apartment. Obviously there is a modem somewhere but I do not have access to it. I am wondering if I hook up a wireless router to said ethernet cable, will I be able to have wireless internet for my apartment? The literature I have found online has mentioned turning off a modem or what not which I am unable to do. Will this cause a problem?

It will workPlug the ethernet cable into the WAN port on the router and it will work. You don't need to unplug/reset the modem. Here is a decent routerhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127220&Tpk=dir-625This router is hardcore and has cool features. I have two of them. It is supported by OpenWRT custom firmware and if you like the stock firmware Oleg has writtem great custom firmware for it too. With the original firmware, you can get a usb HDD and have bitorrent on it so you don't need to leave your computer on to download.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833320008&Tpk=wl-500g

yes, it would but if your computer doen't have a wireless chip built in it, you'd have to buy a mp3-looking thingy to get your computer compatible with wireless internet

yes u can do that... u will just need to configure ur wifi router for that! I have done the same... i have configured my router to point to modem through static IP, using it as a gateway, and then set router's DHCP settings to assign an automatic IP to my laptop whenever its in range!
