39 die in Mexican violence

MAZATLAN, Mexico, (UPI) -- Twenty-nine inmates were killed in a prison melee and at least 10 police officers died in shootouts Monday in Mexico, authorities said.

A spokesman for the Sinaloa state attorney general said 29 prisoners were either shot to death or killed with knives at the prison at Mazatlan, La Cronica de Hoy reported.

The rampage apparently was sparked by a fight among prisoners, the newspaper said.

Once soldiers regained control of the prison, six guns, eight metal spikes and an ice pick were confiscated. A total of 182 shell casings were recovered, the newspaper said.

The deadly incident follows last week's fight between inmates at another prison in the state in which eight inmates died.

The Los Angeles Times reported 10 federal police officers were killed and at least 15 were wounded in two ambushes in Zitacuaro in Michoacan state. An unknown number of gunmen were killed and wounded, the newspaper said.
