Winnipeg police have arrested a 44-year-old man in connection with a fatal hit and run Christmas Eve.

A 66-year-old man was killed on Fife Street, between Mapleglen Drive and Inkster Boulevard, just after 5:30 p.m. Friday.

The man, whose name hasn't been released, was hit as he crossed the street. The driver left the scene, and the victim later died in hospital.

Const. Natalie Aitken says the details of the crime are shocking.

"It's difficult to comprehend how someone could strike a pedestrian, reverse their vehicle and drive around them, leaving them gravely injured," she said Sunday.

Other information about the arrest, including when it happened, was not available.
Tragic week for pedestrians

The victim was the fifth pedestrian in a week to be hit by a vehicle.

On Dec. 19, a 48-year-old man was taken to hospital after being hit by a car whose driver fled the West End scene.

The next day, a 67-year-old woman was killed on Portage Avenue when she was hit by a privately owned bus.

On Thursday morning, a woman was found lying in the middle of River Avenue in Osborne Village, suffering several fractures after being struck.

Police believe she was the victim of a hit and run because pieces of broken car parts lay on the road around her.

Later that day, a 53-year-old woman was struck and killed by a van near McPhillips Street and Pacific Avenue.

The Winnipeg Police Service says there have been 22 vehicle-pedestrian collisions — 14 of them fatal — in 2010, an increase of 10 from 2009.

Drivers need to be more cautious, Aitken said.

"People just need to be paying attention really, when they're driving," she said. "When it's a pedestrian versus a car, the likelihood of injury is significant."
