6000HXC with DishPro, steps for scanning

The manual for the 6000HXC is pretty weak. It mentions the various settings but has no explanation as to what each setting does. My first mistake was right at the top when I selected "Antenna Settings" for the first time. A default satellite was in the top space of the menu. This was not a satellite I needed so how to get to one I want? If you click on the satellite you're asked whether to save it or not. If you're not careful and click "OK" you will have added that satellite to your list. I never figured out how to delete it after it was saved. The delete button on "Edit Satellite" was always grayed out. Later, when I did a factory reset I was able to start over with a clean slate. The trick was to use the right arrow instead of the OK button when asked to save. When using the right arrow button the "save" changes to "NO" and a new drop down appears giving you all the satellites.

I was looking to scan 110 and 119 so I went down the list until Echo 7 appeared. I clicked it and it inserted at the top of the antenna setup menu. I went down the menu to LNB type and selected Dish Pro. I went down the menu to the DiSEqC switch setting. This was confusing to me because since the Dish Pro LNB has its own switch built in and no DiSEqC switch was necessary, I made the assumption that this setting should be turned off. For this particular LNB I found that it would not scan correctly until I set the 119 for DiSEqC #1 and 110 at DiSEqC #2.

Going down the list I came to LNB power. I tried it "Off" and "ON". It didn't seem to matter. The reason I started with "OFF" was because I have a Dish Pro Quad and two of the outputs feed my HD PVR921. So I figured power was already being applied by the 921 and I was afraid adding power from the 6000HXC might damage the LNB or even the receivers. When earlier scans didn't work for me I eventually turned the power "ON" and seemed to get a stronger "level" reading. So I have left them "ON"

Going to the bottom of the list I changed the scan FTA to scan ALL.

I left everything else in the list alone except for the issue of Tuner settings. The manual says you can set the Tuner setting to be either "Tuner 1", "Tuner 2" or "Tuner 1 & 2". That's all it says. Well, this is a 2 tuner receiver so I set the tuner to "Tuner 1 & 2". Seems like the right thing to do, right? WRONG! During scanning you have to set the tuner setting to "Tuner 1". If you use "Tuner 1 & 2" you will end up with duplicate channels. Do your scan and then switch both 119 and 110 back to "Tuner 1 & 2". You'll be asked to re-save the satellites.

The last thing to do before scanning is to click "Edit satellite/TP". Echo 7 has to be renamed ECHO 119 and Echo 8.6 must be renamed ECHO 110. Be sure to put a space between the letters and the numbers.

Now, go to the Scan Satellite part of the setup menu and select Echo 119 and the scanning will begin. Once the process completes, scan 110. After they are both scanned click "sat" on the remote and select Echostar Package. The satellite channels will be correct for Dishnetwork.

As for software updates, I put my update on before I did any setup for satellite scanning. When I did a factory reset I assumed the bin was re-written back to factory each time but I now believe that the bin remained at each reset. I say this because I was going to do the update after my last scan worked but when I could view programming I realized the bin had not been reset.

To get a new bin installed:....I downloaded the new bin's zip file to my computer and unzipped it. I powered off my 6000HXC and pulled the hard drive. I plugged it into my computer using the USB supplied cable. Once I saw the icon for the drive appear on my desktop I simply copied it to the firmware folder in the drive. Then I did a "safely remove hardware" by right clicking the icon in the bottom tray on my desktop. Once it told me it was safe to remove the drive I unplugged the drive and put it back into my 6000HXC.

I powered up my 6000HXC and went to "Software Upgrade from HDD". I clicked on it and was asked for the password (0000) after which I was shown the bin I had just saved. By clicking on it, it was downloaded into the receiver. Upon completion the screen said to switch OFF and then ON. Once that was done the unit powered up with the upgrade in place.

There you are. That's how I got my 6000 to work. The freezing I had been experiencing seems to have been eliminated, and I'm now a happy camper. Hope this helps you as well.
