Northrop to pay $12.5M for false claims
WASHINGTON, (UPI) -- Northrop Grumman has agreed to pay the U.S. government $12.5 million to settle allegations it knowingly falsified documents to government agencies.

The U.S. Justice Department said Wednesday the company made the alleged false claims when it supplied navigation systems for military aircraft and submarines and for certain equipment used in space.

The government alleged Northrop's Navigation Systems Division failed to test certain commercial-grade electronic components at extreme temperatures as required for military and space uses but claimed it did.

Entities affected by the alleged misconduct were the U.S. Navy, Army, Air Force, Defense Logistics Agency, the Coast Guard, the Forest Service and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

"Companies that do business with the government must comply with all of their obligations," Tony West, assistant attorney general for the Civil Division of the Department of Justice, said. "The Justice Department will hold responsible those who fail to properly test the parts supplied to our men and women in uniform and others in public serve."

The department said the settlement resolves claims made in a 2006 whistle-blower lawsuit by a quality assurance manager at Northrop's Navigation Systems Division's facility in Salt Lake City.
