Jobless claims drop by 19,000

WASHINGTON

(UPI) -- First-time claims for U.S. unemployment insurance benefits fell by 19,000 in the week ending June 19, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday.

The four-week rolling average for initial jobless claims was 462,750, a decrease of 1,500 from the previous average. For the week ending June 19, 457,000 first-time claims were filed.

The U.S. unemployment rate is 9.7 percent after dropping 0.2 percentage points April to May.

The biggest increases in claims for the week ending June 12 were reported by California with 17,572 additional claims, Pennsylvania, which added 5,266 and Florida, which added 4,958, the report said.

For the week ending June 12, the biggest decrease was reported by New Mexico, with a decline of 708, followed by Kansas, where claims declined by 596 and Mississippi, where claims fell by 522 compared to the week ending June 5.

State statistics lag a week behind the national report.
