A pathologist in a coroner's inquest examining how an eight-year-old girl died in a Kanata wave pool three years ago testified on Tuesday that the child had drowned.

Third-grader Eline Ilunga was found face-down in the water at the Kanata Leisure Centre's wave pool in 2008 during a friend's birthday party.

While it was initially believed Eline may have choked, pathologist Dr. Joseph de Nanassy said Tuesday that the cause of death was drowning.

Edine was not a strong swimmer and was not wearing a life jacket when she entered the water with 10 other children. Four adults were in the pool with them at the time.
Parks and recreation director testifies

The inquest, which began Monday and is expected to last the week, also heard from Ottawa's parks and recreation director Dan Chenier.

Chenier testified that not long after Edine's death, the city toughened up its pool safety guidelines. Children ages eight to 10 are now required to do a swimming test before being allowed in the water on their own.

Chenier told the inquest jury that he would like to see Queen's Park put similar regulations in place across the province.

The aim of the inquest is to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future by reviewing the circumstances of the accident.
