The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary say they seized a significant amount of marijuana and cash from a home in the St. John's area.

Police say on Thursday afternoon, they executed a search warrant at a home in Mount Pearl. Some 40 pounds of marijuana and $4,200 in cash were seized.

Later that evening, police arrested 42-year-old Sean Ward. He's facing a charge of possession for the purpose of drug trafficking.

As the investigation continued, police later seized a car and an additional $49,000 in cash. This also led to a second arrest. 25-year-old Patrick O'Reilly has been charged with attempting to possess a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. O'Reilly was arrested in St. John's.

Police say both arrests are connected.

RNC Constable Jennifer Clarke said it's a significant seizure.

"If you consider a substance like marijuana, it doesn't have a lot of weight to it--it's sort of like grass. So, if you have 40 pounds of something that doesn't weigh very much, its quite significant," said Clarke.

Both men made their first court appearance on Friday.
