Frustrated ferry users who live on Bell Island say they'll mount a protest if the provincial government doesn't fix problems with the service by Monday.

Hundreds of people rely on the service. However, only one ferry, the MV Beaumont Hamel, is in operation. The second ferry, the MV Nonia, is out for repairs again.

Wabana mayor Gary Gosine said some commuters are showing up at the ferry terminal by 4 a.m. to make sure they can get to work by 9 a.m.

Gosine said the long delays are frustrating and unacceptable.

"We have been very nice to the government. We have never opened up our doors, and our mouths or whatever, to lambaste the government. But when does the government finally realize that enough is enough?" said Gosine.

The mayor told CBC News that island residents have set Monday as a deadline for change.

"If the MV Nonia is not back in the Bell Island service by Monday, the people of Bell Island will be calling a public meeting to stage a public protest," he said.
