A Weyburn woman who threw her stillborn baby's body into the garbage will not have to serve any jail time, a judge decided Friday.

Angela Vermeulen pleaded guilty March 31 to disposing of her child's body with the intent to conceal the fact she had delivered it.

The charge followed an incident more than a year ago that resulted in searchers going through the Weyburn landfill for four days looking for the body of a baby. It was never found.

On Friday, a judge sentenced her to two months of house arrest with electronic monitoring, followed by 18 months of probation.

Court heard Vermeulen, 34, delivered the baby at home, but it never took a breath.

She told authorities she suspected but wasn't sure she was pregnant, but while in the shower, she delivered the stillborn infant. She said she panicked and put it in a garbage bag.

Court heard her common law husband discovered the body while disposing of some broken glass.

She told him it was the result of a miscarriage by another woman. When he went away, she put the bag beside a dumpster, court heard.

In addition to house arrest and probation, Vermeulen must perform 50 hours of community service, the judge said.
