An expensive makeover of Fredericton's waterfront will have to be done again after thousands of dollars worth of sod went missing.

The earth was placed near the New Brunswick city's landmark lighthouse last fall to rejuvenate the appearance of the area. Now, pieces of sod hang from many of the trees along the St. John River and many more have been swept away altogether.

Wayne Tallon, Fredericton's community services director, has faced questions about whether the work was done properly. He said the damage was caused by severe flooding in December 2010 and was not anyone's fault.
Hopes province will help with repairs

"Certainly it wasn't because of poor workmanship on the contractor's part, because we really don't anticipate that kind of event happening on the shores of the St. John River that late in the year," Tallon said.

Tallon said repairs would likely cost between $12,000 and $18,000. Some of that will be covered by contingency funds in the original budget for the project and he hopes the rest will be paid for by the province.

"It is a disaster type of event we can put in a claim to the disaster assistance fund," he said.

Tallon said the contractor will be out as soon as the ground dries up to replace the lost sod and repair what is left.
