A bear and a cub were found walking through the parking lot of Dr. A.T. Leatherbarrow Primary School in Hampton on Monday.

"The kindergarten children in Mrs. Landry's class were thrilled. They were very excited," said the school's principal, Lisa Jardine.

The school kept students inside for recess while the bears moved on.

Jardine said that was for the well-being of students and the animals.

"One of the things we said, just like in Goldilocks, when Baby Bear was frightened by one person sleeping in his bed, imagine how that baby cub would feel seeing over 200 children on the playground?" said Jardine.

Marc Robichaud, a ranger for the Department of Natural Resources, keeps track of bears in the area.

He said a lot of bird feeders, garbage and compost draw the bears into communities when there aren't enough berries and fruit to keep them in their natural habitat.

He wants to make sure they don't make a return appearance at the school.

"To maybe try and catch it with a live trap and move it to another place safe," said Robichaud.

He suggested taking bird feeders down and securing garbage to reduce the risk of having one wander through the public's yards.
