Hundreds lined up for free water from the city of Dorval after the municipality issued an alert warning residents not to use tap water until further notice.
The city said because of an incident at an Air Canada facility at around noon on Friday, the municipality's water distribution network could be contaminated.
Residents of Dorval, which is in Montreal's West Island, are advised to use bottled water for consumption, for cleaning food or for brushing their teeth.
The mayor of Dorval said some stagnant water was accidentally fed into the drinking water supply by a contractor working on pipes at the Air Canada base.
Edgar Rouleau said the city issued the advisory after some local businesses complained they were getting brown water through their taps.
"We can't take a chance because we don't really know what's in that water. It might just be brown water. But we can't take a chance that people drink that," said Rouleau.
Rouleau said the water has been tested, but residents won't be advised to resume drinking their tap water again for at least 48 hours.
The city is distributing bottled water to residents until at least Sunday at the Sarto Desnoyers Community Centre on Lakeshore Drive.
About a hundred cars lined up Friday evening in the centre's parking lot, blocking traffic both ways on Lakeshore.
The city said residents can call (514) 633-4040 if they have questions.
