The Saskatoon SPCA is getting help from the Edmonton Humane Society to cope with 31 greyhound and mixed-greyhound dogs recently seized from a farm in Saskatchewan.
The animals were found to be in distress on May 30 following an investigation by the Saskatchewan SPCA. A total of 32 dogs were taken from a farm near MacNutt, Sask.
One dog was put in the care of a veterinarian.
The shelter said 17 of the dogs now at the shelter in Saskatoon will travel to Edmonton on Wednesday.
"The transfer of these dogs will not only help assure these greyhounds find the happy homes they deserve, but will also help provide the Saskatoon SPCA with the room necessary for the rest of the adoptable animal population," the agency said in a news release Tuesday.
The arrival of a large number of animals from MacNutt was the third time this year that the Saskatoon SPCA has faced an influx of animals. It came just two weeks after the shelter took in 24 seized huskies.
"We are very excited to be working with the Edmonton Humane Society," Tiffiny Koback, Saskatoon's shelter director, said. "We are very fortunate to have support from other humane societies, just as we always do what we can to help out."
The Saskatoon SPCA said it has waited the required three days for the owner of the dogs to come forward. It said the dogs may now be made available for adoption.
Koback said the 14 dogs remaining in Saskatoon will be available beginning June 13.
The Edmonton-bound dogs will be made available for adoption in that city.
MacNutt is about 370 kilometres southeast of Saskatoon, not far from the Manitoba boundary.
