There are many ways to destroy a HDD: Take a very very strong magnet to the drive platters. Take a grinder to the surface of the drive platters, or Take a wire brush drive platters.

Yes. We have 3 computers, and 1 is about 7 years old. Ubuntu linux works very well on them! Puppy Ubunto has great graphics too on the old one!
