1 killed as speedboat slams into houseboat
MAGNA BAY, British Columbia, (UPI) -- One person was killed and eight were injured when a speedboat slammed into a houseboat on a lake in south-central British Columbia, Canadian police said Sunday.
The crash occurred around 11:20 p.m. Saturday as boats on Shuswap Lake were dispersing after an annual fireworks display in the waterside community of Magna Bay, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said.
The houseboat operator, an unidentified 40-year-old man from Anglemont, B.C., was pronounced dead at the scene, CTV News reported.
The eight others were taken to a hospital. Six were treated and released. The two others were admitted.
"The injuries sustained ranged from minor bruises to fractures and head injuries," Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said in a statement.
The collision was so powerful the speedboat ended up entirely inside the houseboat, Moskaluk said.
Police gave no word on what caused the crash or whether alcohol played a role.
