20,000 roosters killed in cock fights?

COLUMBIA, S.C., Federal prosecutors say a small town in South Carolina was home to a secret cockfighting arena where 20,000 birds lost their lives.

Court documents indicate cockfighting matches were held twice a month seven months out of the year for 18 years in Swansea, a town with a population of less than 650, The (Columbia, S.C.) State reported. The documents were released Tuesday at the sentencing of Jimmy Collins, 52, of Duncan, one of the managers of the operation.

Collins received a 21-month sentence, less than prosecutors sought but more than his lawyer asked for. The sentence was one of the longest imposed so far on those arrested after a federal sting.

Federal prosecutors Nathan Williams and Debbie Barbier said more than 1,100 roosters fought to the death every year.

"Every single bird in this case was treated with nothing short of extraordinary cruelty," they said.
