23 dead, 59 missing in Philippine typhoon
MANILA, Philippines, Typhoon Basyang killed at least 23 people in the Philippines before heading toward China, authorities said Thursday

Another 59 people were still unaccounted for, Xinhua reported.

The National Disaster Coordinating Council said 17 of the fatalities were in southwestern Luzon, three in the central Luzon region and three in southeastern Luzon, the Chinese news agency said.

Basyang, also referred to as Typhoon Conson, had destroyed 370 houses and damaged 2,904 others since making landfall late Tuesday. Power also was knocked out to much of the region. It was expected to be days before power was fully restored.

The storm, weakened after passing over the Philippines, was headed toward China's Hainan and Guangdong provinces, Xinhua said.
