BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A woman and four girls were pulled to safety after an early-morning crash.

The crash happened about 12:20 a.m. Friday along Highway 58, just east of the 99 Freeway, when a car flipped and landed upside down on the guardrail.

"Two people stopped to pull the kids out of the backseat window before emergency crews arrived," said 23ABC's Elaina Rusk, who was the second person at the scene.

The driver's face was covered in blood. The young girls seemed to be physically unharmed, though they were all too shaken to talk.

When California Highway Patrol officers arrived, they handed the girls blankets, water and phones.

The CHP is still investigating the crash, but the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
