5 die in Texas plane crash

ALPINE, Texas, (UPI) -- Authorities in western Texas spent the Fourth of July investigating the cause of an air ambulance crash that claimed five lives.

Odessa's KOSA-TV reported the twin-engine Cessna 421 went down near Alpine early Sunday. There were no survivors.

The TV station said the O'Hara Flying Service plane was transferring a patient, Mary Folger of Midland, from Alpine to Odessa.

Also killed were her husband Guy; the pilot, Ted Caffarel of Beaumont; and flight nurses Tracy Chambers of Alpine and Sharon Falkener of Fort Davis.

Authorities said the plane crashed a mile after it took off, exploding upon impact. Mechanical problems were suspected in the crash.

Federal agencies were taking part in the investigation.
