Many years ago I had a job as a salesman for Pacific Cured Meat Products. We sold all sorts of sausages, salamis, tubemeats, and even some Continental specialties in the German tradition. All first-class stuff.
I was in the Vancouver area and was making calls on prospective wholesale accounts. One day I found myself at the Waterfront, and while doing the "tourist thing" I found myself in a small gallery that had a selection of the most exquisite full-bodied woodcarvings of birds that I'd ever seen... I especially was taken with a life-sized depiction of the Pacific Least Tern. I mean, the detail, finish and porportion was truly astounding. You expected it to fly away at any moment!
I struck up a conversation with the gallery owner and he inquired as to what I did for a living. I told him and he said that he was a real connoisseur of Bavarian smoked meats. Well, I had the Continental sample case with me and showed him some of my wares. He was interested in a large smoked Bratwurst, so I thought "what the hell" and cut a piece for him. He was really enthused with my product, so ...we engaged in a little negotiation...
It was then that I took a tern for the wurst...
