ACLU: Wash. must stop surveillance
SEATTLE, (UPI) -- University of Washington campus police officers attended at least two student meetings under cover, the American Civil Liberties Union says.
The group called on the state legislature Thursday to pass a bill to ban surveillance of political or religious groups, The Seattle Times reported. Kathleen Taylor, the executive director of the ACLU of Washington, said the organization got details of surveillance at the university and other state schools.
Sarah White, a member of the Student Workers Coalition, said at the news conference that a campus police officer, Tanesha van Leuven, attended a meeting in April, claiming to be a student named "Tani." Members of the group, which advocates better conditions for university employees, learned she was a police officer when they saw her in uniform several days after the meeting.
The State Patrol and other police agencies have settled with Philip Chinn, a student and anti-war activist at Evergreen State College, who said he was harassed.
