Americans angry at Washington; pessimistic

WASHINGTON, (UPI) -- U.S. residents are frustrated with nearly everyone of any political stripe in Washington and more pessimistic about the future, a CBS News poll indicates.

Seven in 10 respondents said they were dissatisfied with what was going on in Washington, including 22 percent who said they were "angry" about the situation, survey results released Wednesday indicated. Only 15 percent of those polled said they approved of the job being done in Congress.

Their anger is divided equally between the major political parties. The CBS News poll indicated 55 percent of those surveyed held unfavorable views of Republicans and 54 percent viewed Democrats in an unfavorable light.

President Barack Obama's job approval rating fell to 47 percent in the latest CBS News poll, with 47 percent of respondents saying he no longer shares their priorities for the country, up from 38 percent in October. The percentage of respondents saying Obama shares their priorities fell to 45 percent, a drop of 13 percentage points from seven months ago.

Looking ahead, one in two Americans said they expected life for the next generation to be worse than now, up from 32 percent last March, the poll indicated. One in five expects it to be better.

Results are based on a nationwide sample of 1,054 adults Thursday through Monday. The margin of error is 3 percentage points.
