The Archdiocese of New York announced Tuesday that 13 Catholic schools in the city will close for good in June.

The Archdiocese says the closings will affect more than 3,600 elementary school students in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island.

A spokesman for the archdiocese says the closings are necessary to save the system as a whole.

"We want to make sure that a Catholic school education is available to any child who seeks one. We can't necessarily maintain the same number of buildings or institutions in order to do that, but the goal is to make sure that we have a healthy, vibrant, and growing school system," said Archdiocesan Spokesman Joseph Zwilling.

"In my years as president or vice-president, today had to be the worst day that I've had," said Federation of Catholic Teachers President Patricia Gabriel. "Never have we dealt with this number of schools closing at one time. Never have we had so many teachers affected, whose lives were affected today, the way they were."

There was good news for one Manhattan school.

Good Shepherd, originally designated as "at-risk," will stay open because it created a long-term financial plan -- so it won't need to be subsidized.
