A coal car derailment in northeastern British Columbia is blocking east-west rail traffic on Canadian National's northern line.

According to CN, 33 coal cars on a westbound train derailed Sunday night just south of McBride.

The corporation said no one was injured and the derailment has not caused any environmental damage.

Rail traffic to and from Prince Rupert is being affected.

Crews are on scene at the remote location but there is no immediate word on when rail traffic through the area will resume.

CN said it is not clear what caused the derailment.
