Belleville police Chief Cory McMullan was beaten by her husband and her arm was broken in an Aug. 6 assault at her home.

The husband of Belleville, Ont., police Chief Cory McMullan was sentenced Friday to 30 days in jail for assaulting her.

David McMullan, 53, pleaded guilty in October to one count of assault causing bodily harm.

McMullan admitted he beat his wife and broke her arm in August in a jealous rage over "unfounded" suspicions she was cheating on him.

He later said it was "irrational" for him to think his wife was having an affair.

The court also sentenced McMullan to 18 months probation.

He will also face a lifetime ban on possessing weapons.

McMullan, a retired police officer, has said he hopes to be able to reconcile with his family.

Cory McMullan had come forward and told the media about the assault.

In an email, she said that given her position in the community, "it is important to acknowledge that I am the victim."
