A ferocious storm hitting much of Newfoundland on Wednesday was so strong that snowclearing machinery was pulled in some areas.

Many schools in parts of Newfoundland were closed for a second day, amid warnings that included blizzard-like conditions, high winds and chilly temperatures.

In central Newfoundland, the Department of Transportation kept snowclearing equipment off many regional highways. On the Northern Peninsula, many roads were blocked to travel.

The storm has stretched into southern Labrador where the highway between Cartwright and Red Bay was closed.

A blizzard warning in central Newfoundland meant school closures throughout the region with storm warnings affecting daily activities from St. Anthony on the Northern Peninsula to St. John's in the east.

In metropolitan St. John's — where schools controversially stayed open Tuesday, despite blustery weather — the Eastern School District heeded weather warnings and closed all of its schools in that area.

Schools in other areas, such as Random Island, Clarenville and on the Avalon Peninsula's Southern Shore, were also closed.

The board cited the day's forecast of high winds, freezing rain and blowing snow.

Numerous offices and community services were closed for the day.

The weather has temporarily suspended Marine Atlantic's ferry service across the Cabot Strait.
