Bosnian killer extradited by Canada
CALGARY, Alberta, (UPI) -- A killer fugitive from Bosnia has been returned to his home country from Canada where he had been living, immigration officials said Wednesday.
The Canada Border Services Agency said Elvir Pobric, 38, was deported Monday after he exhausted his avenues of appeal, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
Pobric had been serving 20 years for robbing and killing two men when he escaped from a Bosnian prison in 1992. He obtained refugee status in Canada in 1999 and evaded detection as a wanted fugitive until his arrest in Calgary in 2009, the CBC said.
"We welcome the news that this murderer has been removed from Canada and is in the hands of the appropriate Bosnian authorities," Canadian Public Safety Minister Vic Toews said.
"Our government remains committed to ensuring our communities are safe, and that Canada does not become a safe haven for fugitives trying to escape justice."
