Police in Nova Scotia say they disarmed a 10-year-old boy who threatened them with a knife Tuesday in Sydney.

Cape Breton Regional Police said they were called just after 9:30 a.m. after the Membertou boy left Shipyard Elementary School without permission.

With the help of a police dog, they found the boy about 30 minutes later walking on Bentinck Street in downtown Sydney.

Cape Breton Regional Police Sgt. Mike Kennedy said the boy threatened officers and a brief standoff ensued.

"We were going to pick him up and bring him back to the school. He pulled out a pocket knife and began threatening officers and telling them if they did come near him, he was going to harm them or harm himself," Kennedy told CBC News.

More officers were called to nearby Wentworth Park. Police blocked off the street and tried to calm the boy.

"One of the members was able to distract him and another member came up and subdued him and the knife was taken away from him," Kennedy said.

No one was hurt.

Kennedy said this is the fourth or fifth time the boy has tried to run away.

Officials at the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board said they are aware of the situation and believe the students at Shipyard Elementary School are safe.

"We are going to implement all kinds of strategies and interventions for the school for the safety of the students and of that particular student," said Charles Sheppard, the co-ordinator of school services for the school board.

The boy was arrested under the Mental Health Act and taken to Cape Breton Regional Hospital for an assessment. Because the boy is less than 12 years old, no charges will be laid.
