Buffett lunch auction nets $2.6 million

SAN FRANCISCO, (UPI) -- A San Francisco charity for the homeless says an anonymous bidder in its online auction is paying $2.6 million for lunch with investment icon Warren Buffett.

Buffett offered to host the lunch to help raise money for the Glide Foundation, which aids the homeless in San Francisco's downtown Tenderloin district.

The Glide staff declined to say who made the winning bid for the lunch date, which The Wall Street Journal said Saturday would likely be convened at Smith and Wollensky, a favorite haunt for the Oracle of Omaha when he is in Manhattan.

The Journal said Buffett annually offers the lunch for a party of as many as eight to aid a charity. Friday's winning bid was a record, topping the $2.1 million paid in 2008 by investor Zhao Danyang.

Glide was the beneficiary this year in part because Buffett's late wife, Susan, had been a volunteer for the organization.
