Canadian builder shot outside Sikh temple
SURREY, British Columbia, -- A British Columbian developer was shot and wounded outside a Sikh temple after a wedding, Royal Canadian Mounted Police said.
Harjit Singh Atwal, 54, was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries after being shot Saturday in the thigh in the parking lot of the Guru Nanak Temple in Surrey, RCMP Staff Sgt. Dave Brown and witnesses told the Vancouver Province.
The person believed to be the shooter, whose identity is known to police, fled the scene, Brown said. He said the RCMP was interviewing several witnesses to the shooting, which he said was targeted, not random.
Parmjit Singh, a friend of the victim, said Atwal told him who his attacker was. Singh said the shooting is the result of a longstanding dispute between the gunman and the victim.
Temple president Bikramjit Singh Sandhar condemned the shooting and said it was "a personal dispute that unfortunately found its way into the gurdwara (temple) parking lot."
