TONAWANDA, N.Y. - Authorities tell News 4, one body was inside the black Chevy pickup truck that was pulled from the canal.

Crews pulled a body and a vehicle from the water, Monday morning. Tire tracks tell part of the story, near the Erie Canal. It is unclear if the person was speeding or trying to stop. A lamp post and ladder were knocked down in the process of the crash.

It started around 5 a.m. when a pedestrian on the bike path noticed the tire tracks leading straight to the water. Dive teams quickly assembled, but it took awhile before they were able to locate the vehicle.

"The vehicle was, I would say, about ten feet off the the dock from where the entry point into the canal. At this point it looks like an unfortunate accident," said Tonawanda Police Department Detective Tim Toth.

Detectives are trying to determine the cause of the accident, and the time of the accident. The city of Tonawanda Police have identified the victim as 51-year-old Kevin Hughes of Lockport. While the investigation is in the early stages, authorities believe it was an accident.
