Chihuahua mix takes 'Ugliest Dog' title
PETALUMA, Calif., (UPI) -- "Princess Abby," a Chihuahua mix from Clearlake, Calif., won the title of "World's Ugliest Dog" at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma Friday.
Abby, displaying her "squinty left eye, a deformed right front paw and a swayed back" before the panel of judges, beat out last year's winner, "Pabst," after winning the mutt division to advance to the Ring of Champions, The Santa Rosa Press-Democrat reported.
"She was going to be put to sleep -- she had so many problems. I got her just in time," said Princess Abby's owner, Kathleen Francis, who adopted Abby five months ago.
Many of the dogs in the competition suffer from ailments ranging from "limps, bald spots, sagging tongues and scars" to more serious conditions including cancer and missing limbs.
"She's a poster child for spaying and neutering your dog," judge and veterinarian Karen Halligan said of Abby. "A lot of these dogs are going down."
