Collins takes over in Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA, (UPI) -- Doug Collins was introduced as the coach of the Philadelphia 76ers, a team he helped to the NBA finals in 1977 as a player.
Collins, 58, agreed last week to coach the Sixers -- his fourth NBA head coaching position. He built a 332-287 record over eight seasons while coaching Chicago, Detroit and Washington. He last coached in the 2002-03 season.
Philadelphia made Collins the first overall pick of the 1973 draft. He averaged 17.9 points over 415 games for the Sixers, with a six-game loss to Portland in the 1977 finals the closest the team got to the title in that span.
He's taking over a team that was 27-55 under Eddie Jordan.
"We're not ready to win a championship," Collins said at a news conference Monday. "I'm talking about being relevant again.
"This city loves pro basketball. This is one of the signature franchises in the NBA. We need to get back and we need to be relevant. We need to build something that is going to last."
