Communications Market Set For Shakeup

According to a report released Thursday by market research firm Yankee Group, 2009 is setting up to be an important year for the communications business.
Why? Because although consumer spending is going down, the need for affordable, "anywhere" communication is as hot as ever, meaning firms will have to adjust their offerings to fit the market.
“In this global economic crisis, necessity will force adaptation," said Zeus Kerravala, Yankee Group senior vice president of research. The communications sector is notoriously slow to change and will have to redefine its spending and consumption models in order to survive. Hold on to your seats: 2009 will be a year to remember.”
Among the group's predictions for 2009: premium provider brands will lose market share, wireless broadband will begin to replace wireline, as many as two of the eight major network equipment manufacturers will be forced out of the market and subsidies on smart phones will strangle operator profits, forcing a change in that business model.
