Court negates right-wing amnesty law

JERUSALEM, Israel's High Court of Justice ruled Sunday a law giving amnesty to non-violent protesters against the 2005 Israeli pullout from Gaza is illegal.

The court said the law harms equality and told the government to explain within 90 days why it should not be revoked, Haaretz reported.

The amnesty law -- which applies to crimes in which there was no threat to life -- says any sentence against anyone convicted of a crime, as long as the motive was to thwart the Gaza disengagement, should be suspended. Indictments of the right-wing protesters also would be quashed.

The case was filed by 12 protesters arrested in demonstrations against the evacuation of Palestinians in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheik Jarrah, Haaretz said. The plaintiffs claim left-wing demonstrators are targets of discrimination, while the law protects right-wing demonstrators.
