BOSTON - Court papers say the Boston medical student accused of killing a masseuse he met on Craigslist owes more than $130,000 in student loans and cannot afford a lawyer.
The document obtained from Boston Municipal Court says Philip Markoff also does not get money from his parents. They live in upstate New York. The document says the Boston University student has been unemployed long enough to be eligible for an appointed lawyer paid through public funds.
Markoff is charged with murdering 25-year-old Julissa Brisman of New York City this month at a Boston hotel.
He also is charged in a robbery at a nearby hotel of another masseuse police say he met through Craigslist.
He has pleaded not guilty.
His lawyer says he is innocent.
