ATLANTA -- A group of Dept. of Transportation workers stumbled upon several sticks of dynamite near a bridge in northwest Atlanta, police confirmed.

The dynamite was discovered during a routine bridge inspection near the intersection of Hollywood Road and Hightower Road in northwest Atlanta.

An Atlanta police spokesman said first responders were trying to determine how best to dispose of the dynamite. They later detonated the dynamite in a controlled blast, police said.

A representative for Atlanta-Fire Rescue said the package had wires sticking out of it. Police said the elements may have been left over from construction.

Police said they have no reason to believe that this is an act of terrorism or that this incident possesses any security threat.

Four people were evacuated from a nearby business, and officials said the area is not heavily populated with homes.
