Dozens die in Iraqi bombings

BAGHDAD, (UPI) -- Insurgents detonated a string of bombs in Iraq Wednesday, killing at least 41 people and injuring 181 others, most of them religious pilgrims, authorities said.

McClatchy Newspapers reported the deadliest attack was carried out by a suicide bomber wearing a vest packed with explosives that targeted pilgrims near Abu Haneefa al Numan Mosque in Adhamiyah, north of Baghdad, about 8 p.m. That blast killed at least 28 people and wounded 81, McClatchy said.

A roadside bomb struck pilgrims near Qahtan Square in west Baghdad at 9:30 p.m., killing six and injuring 45.

Two roadside bombs, again targeting religious faithful, went off at 6 p.m. in New Baghdad and Fdhailiyah, killing five people and injuring 35.

Six pilgrims were wounded when a roadside bomb exploded in southwest Baghdad at 7 p.m.

Nine pilgrims were hurt when a roadside bomb detonated on a central Baghdad street at 10:45 p.m. and two people were hurt when another roadside bomb exploded in west Baghdad at 11:15 p.m., McClatchy said.

Iraqi police and army troops didn't escape the violence. A magnetic bomb attached to a car in south Baghdad went off at 8 a.m., killing police Maj. Abdulrahman Sabeeh.

A roadside bomb hit an Iraqi army patrol in west Baghdad at 9 a.m., wounding three soldiers.

A suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden car at a checkpoint in west Baghdad, killing one officer and injuring two soldiers and two civilians.
