Dozens of animals seized from home

DETROIT, Police in suburban Detroit seized more than 50 dogs, cats and rabbits from a home and shelters said dozens of people have come forward with adoption requests.

Witnesses said the 65-year-old homeowner and her 34-year-old daughter were taken into custody after complaints about the Redford Township home's odor led police to discover the animals in the home. Possible charges against the two were unclear, The Detroit News reported Friday.

Neighbors said they had been calling city officials about the odor for years.

The dogs, cats and rabbits were sent to various shelters in the area. Donna Law, president of Mutts & Mutts, a shelter that received 12 of the dogs, said dozens of people had volunteered to adopt some of the seized canines as of Thursday afternoon.

"We're cleaning the dogs up now," Law said. "They're in pretty good shape; a little dirty and their nails are long. One had a fatty tumor that needed to be removed, but they're not too bad overall."
