DETROIT, Mich - A 25 year veteran of the Detroit Public schools has been suspended without pay following an internal probe showing her “padding the payroll” for a dozen teachers in an after school program.

Principal Ceceilia Muhammad was escorted out of the Rutherford Academy yesterday, after the school system inspector generals conclusion: that during a six month period, from November of 2009 until May of 2010, Muhammad, who was at the time an assistant principal at the Durfee K-through 8 school, turned in time sheets for three hours of work, when at least a dozen teachers were working only two hours in an after school learning program. The twelve teachers now face disciplinary hearings, but remain on the job.

“I received an anonymous email from inside the system”, emergency financial manager Robert Bobb told action news.

“To somehow say we’re going to pay someone for three hours, but to educate children for only 2 hours is to me criminal in and of itself.”
“I am disappointed, but remain encouraged that tips continue to come in from honest DPS employees.”

Muhammad faces a hearing, and based on the result, she could be fired and the facts, if they warrant, will be turned over to the Wayne County prosecutor.
