Ex-Canadian bishop denies sex abuse charge
OTTAWA, (UPI) -- Former Roman Catholic bishop Raymond Lahey, who resigned amid child pornography charges in Canada, denies he molested an orphan in the 1980s.
Lahey said in a court filing he never sexually assaulted Todd Boland, a former resident of the Mount Cashel orphanage in St. John's, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Tuesday.
Lahey declared his innocence in a statement of defense filed Monday in the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador in the civil lawsuit Boland filed last month.
Boland's attorney, Greg Stack, has described the alleged molestation as "fondling" that occurred over four years starting in 1982.
The Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation of St. John's also is named as a defendant in Boland's suit.
Lahey quit as head of the diocese of Antigonish in Nova Scotia after being charged in September with possession of child pornography. He is to go to trial on those charges next April.
