Filipinos note death of former president

MANILA, Philippines, Filipinos Sunday noted the first anniversary of the death of former President Corazon Aquino with a mass and other events, officials said.

In addition to the mass, countrymen gathered at Manila Memorial Park to pay respects to the former president, whose husband, Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, Jr., was assassinated in 1983, Filipino media ABS-CBN reported.

Prior to the mass, her family, led by son and current President Benigno "Nonnoy" Aquino III, unveiled a historical marker in her honor. A video called "Her Legacy, Our Promise: The People's Tribute to Cory Aquino," was also announced.

Several hundred bicyclists pedaled in a bike-a-thon to honor Aquino.

Following the mass, attendees watched a video presentation, "People Power People," which encouraged volunteerism among Filipinos.

Corazon Cojuangco Aquino was born in Manila on January 25, 1933, the sixth of eight children of Jose and Demetria Cojuangco. She died of cancer in 2009.
