BOSTON -- A 16-year-old Sutton boy collapsed and died while playing in a football game in Warren on Monday.

Michael Ellsessar was playing at Quaboag Regional High School when he was hit while catching a pass.

"He was killed while playing football. It was early in the game. He caught a pass, got hit, went to the ground. He got up and then collapsed back down on the field. EMTs rushed to him, tried to resuscitate him, performed CPR unsuccessfully," Michael's father, John Ellsessar, said.

The cause of death was not immediately known, but John Ellsessar said it was a freak accident.

"Doctors said he had a better chance of getting hit by lightning than this. It happens 50 times across the country per year. You think, how many kids are playing football. It is a dangerous and violent sport, but kids play it from 7 on up, and it's too bad," he said.

Michael, a wide receiver and defensive back, attended Sutton High School and was playing for Oxford High School because Sutton does not have a football team.

"My son was a varsity player for three different high schools. Track and field for Sutton. He played hockey for the Northbridge Rams, which Sutton co-ops with. They co-op in Oxford for the Oxford Pirates," John Ellsessar said.

He said his son was not only a three-sport athlete, but he was active in his church and a number of community groups.

"Hug your kids, if you have them, keep them close, and watch out for them," John Ellsessar said. "No parent deserves to bury their 16-year-old son. It is devastating."
