Former Rwandan army chief shot and wounded
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, (UPI) -- The former head of the Rwandan army, now living in South Africa, was shot and wounded Saturday in Johannesburg.
His wife told the BBC the shooting was clearly an attempt to assassinate Gen. Faustin Kayumba Nyamwasa. She said her husband was shot in the stomach as the two of them drove home from a shopping expedition.
Nyamwasa underwent emergency surgery immediately after the shooting, his wife said.
Formerly the army chief of staff, Nyamwasa was once a close ally of Rwandan President Paul Kagame, serving under him in the rebel Rwandan Patriotic Front in the early 1990s. More recently, he has been harshly critical of the president and accused him of corruption after fleeing to South Africa in February.
In an interview with the BBC, he said the Rwandan judiciary is now "Kagame's property."
Nyamwasa, like many African leaders, is a controversial figure. France and Spain have issued arrest warrants for crimes he allegedly committed before and during the 1994 genocide.
