<div>A Cornwall man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the slaying of a five-year-old girl three years ago.

Shane Haley, 23, was arrested in 2008 shortly after the body of Alissa Martin-Travers was found in her home in downtown Cornwall. Police said there were obvious signs of trauma on her body.

It was later learned that Haley had known the victim's mother.

Haley pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to the charge of first-degree murder, but entered a plea of guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree murder.

After assessing the evidence, the Crown said it didn't believe it could prove that the murder had been pre-meditated
