Home raided in vet's association probe
TAMPA, Fla., Investigators have confirmed they served search warrants on a Florida home as part their investigation into the U.S. Navy Veterans Association.

Investigators from the IRS and other state and federal agencies carted off computer records and boxes of documents, some of which had been shredded, from the home in Clair-Mel, Fla., owned by two women who had been associates of missing association Director Bobby Thompson.

The IRS declined comment on the nature of the material seized, the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times said Sunday.

The Tampa-based association has been hit with allegations that millions of dollars of donations cannot be accounted for, and that associates of Thompson were listed as officers of the group.

The Times said the Clair-Mel home is listed as belonging to Blanca Contreras, 38, a former worker at a citrus packing plant, and her 20-year-old daughter, Nancy Contreras. The pair were recently registered as officers of the association in several states.

Thompson moved out of his home last month and has not been seen since. The newspaper said the Navy Veterans Association's offices have been traced to post office boxes, and 84 of the 85 individuals listed as association officers have yet to be located.
