Iran douses oil blaze sparked in May
TEHRAN, (UPI) -- Iranian firefighters extinguished a fire at an oil well in the western province of Kermanshah nearly 40 days after it started, authorities said.

A natural gas explosion at a rig in the Naftshahr field set balls of flames into the air in late May, killing three workers and leaving 12 others injured. The blaze at one point was consuming 8,000 barrels of oil per day.

A team of experts from the National Iranian Drilling Co. managed to douse the flames, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reports.

Heydar Bahmani, the managing director at the NIDC, said the blaze should have taken around six months to contain.

Workers had to build three artificial lakes at the site to give responders the water they needed to fight the fire.

The Naftshahroil field was discovered in 1923. It holds an estimated 692 million barrels of oil.
