Baghdad, Iraq -- Iraqi security forces said Saturday that the arrest of at least 15 suspected terrorists have added to a string of successes against such operations that lead attacks in the country.
Forces arrested members of terrorist cells in Ahdamiya and Mosul, said Mohammed al-Askari, a spokesman for Iraq's Ministry of Defense.
The suspects are believed to be behind two coordinated attacks in the Baghdad areas of Bab al-Mouadham and Ahdamiya, al-Askari said at a news conference.
Journalists were shown a video of seven suspects who reportedly confessed, as well as video of the aftermath of the Bab al-Mouadham attack. Eight members of a cell in Mosul also were arrested, al-Askari said.
"Their terrorist operations in Baghdad were very well planned and well-coordinated in order to destabilize the security situation in a very critical time of forming the government," al-Askari said of the suspects.
In September, Iraqi security systems were able to cut terrorist operations against civilians and Iraqi security forces by 36 percent, the spokesman said.
Five suicide bombers carried out the September assault in the Bab al-Mouadham area of Baghdad, security forces said at the time. At least 12 people were killed and 36 others were injured in the attack, the Iraqi military command said.
The target was the same military base used as an Iraqi army recruitment center and attacked by a suicide bomber August 17. The Islamic State of Iraq, an umbrella group for al Qaeda in Iraq, and other Sunni extremist groups claimed responsibility for that bombing.
In July, clashes erupted between Iraqi security forces and insurgents in the Sunni neighborhood of Ahdamiya, wounding 10 people, officials said.
